Facebook account hacked

Published August 6, 2009 by Sean

6th August, about 4pm. My facebook account is hacked, and someone pretending to be me is messaging people asking for money to help me out of an urgent problem. I’m not having any cashflow probs so far as know!
9am 7th August – my facebook account is 0wned by me again:)

This is the classic 419 scam. Someone gains the ability to plausibly impersonate you, contacts people who may not know you well (those who do know are discarded) and spins some panicy story about being mugged, needing cash in a hurry. I don’t know the rest of the story as noone fell for it.

If in doubt, phone, email, check blog. Remember, if they are not in trouble, people will be able to access their email. Check other people’s status, spread the word, check if their wall is blocked or hidden.

Things to reset:

  • Authorised Applications
  • Block list (discarded targets are blocked)
  • Wall settings (noone can post or see friends posts)
  • facebook mobile (open channel even once access is restored

Hi Sean, We are making a documentary for Channel 4 on 419 scams in which we hope to raise awareness of scams such as this. We are in early stages of research and hoping to speak to as many people as possible who have been victims of such fraud. Please email me if you would like to chat. Thanks, Fred
