HTPC build, take 2

Published November 19, 2012 by Sean

After a slow start in 2009, my HTPC Build is back with a new machine.

CPU: A10-5700 3.4GHz 60W
MB: ASUS F2 A85-M PRO
RAM: 8GB DDR3 2166
SDD: Samsung 830 64GB
NAS: QNAP TS219P-II
DVB: PCTV Systems DVB-T2 290e nanoStick
KBD: Logitech diNovoEdge

Case is the same lian-li-c36, but with a replaced PSU since the old one died already.

OS is Linux Mint 14 (Nadia) RC1.

Issues so far:
Running a windows VM from NAS over WiFi is unusably slow.
UEFI boot with Mint does not quite work (TBD link)
DVB-T2 stick did not find any channels on first attempt.
SDD was not detected with overclocking enabled.
LM-Sensors does not report anything from the Hudson support chip for the AMD A10 CPU. No fans, no temperature, not even SMART temps (although these are visible through disk util).

The drive in my NAS shows some bad blocks, trying to force writes to these to re-allocate them (A total of about 5 bad blocks doesn’t seem too much of a bad sign, I suspect the old motherboard contributed to data corruption).

Idle power drain for the system (MB, CPU, SSD) seems to be about 40W. Comparison with the old system pending…
